Signs of (My) Times: Namibia

Signs of (My) Times: Namibia

It has been a year of unleashed wanderlust, after the restraints of the Covid era. I thank my good fortune plus the ability to spend my time as I see fit (even though I am not retired!) plus that all-important ingredient: gumption. These are what enable my adventures out into the world.

Now that I have arrived home for the foreseeable future, curiosity has led me to account for the accumulated wear & tear on both me and my suitcases. Have I been away more than at home? Indeed: beginning April 9 and ending September 25, 2022, I spent 86 days at home and 96 days “on the road.” I can’t wait to share blogs about the places and people that came my way during my 2022 travels.

A favorite hobby is collecting images of interesting or unusual signposts, and we came across many in our travels across Namibia in July. One does not see caution signs like these in North America!

Credit must also go to Namibia for its humorous toilet signs. What refreshing honesty, depicting how people looking for restrooms often feel! Messaging about which door was for whom was also amusing and fun.

My four weeks in Namibia were characterized by an on-going and very frustrating battle to receive my “missing” luggage. I took heart from a couple of signs posted in the capital city of Windhoek, and persisted.

My bag finally arrived late in the evening the day before my departure, only a little worse for wear. My host and I had “Christmas in August” as I delivered his long-awaited gifts and some for others. Early the next morning, the bag was gingerly re-entered into the aviation system. It arrived home with me 30+ hours later—but only after another hour of waiting while a jammed baggage hold was jimmied open. At least it ended well and I was safely home for a few days between adventures. Stay tuned for lots more about this year of journeying hither and yon.
